In one of our Plano roof rack storage boxes, we keep everything related to overland cooking, food preparation, and eating (except for stove fuel, which I keep inside the car). I put this box on the left side of the car, since the awning is on the right, and we frequently need to access this one while the awning is out. Below are the things we normally keep in the cooking box.
- Coleman Butane camp stove – easy and reliable overland cooking stove. And the carrying case fits perfectly sideways in the Plano box
- JetBoil Sol Ti (they don’t make this one anymore, but the Jetboil MicroMo is very similar) – awesome for quickly boiling water or for making coffee
- Jetboil FluxRing Cooking Pot – twice the capacity of the normal JetBoil cup, still boils really fast
- Stanley Vacuum Bottle – keeps liquids hot or cold for an unreasonably long time. We use this for hot water, coffee, and soup. Sometimes I keep this in my coffee kit instead.
- Aluminum foil & plastic wrap
- Plastic Cutting board
- Wok
- Cooking pot with lid
- Pan
- Stainless steel mixing bowl
- Ladle and spatula
- Steamer basket
- Salad spinner – easy and fast way to rinse and dry vegetables, and can be used as a strainer
- Paper plates – we try to use reusable plates when we can, but sometimes you need disposable ones
- 2 Bowls and 2 plates
- Metal & plastic silverware
- Knives – good, sharp knives make a big difference
- Trivets – for setting hot pans on things that melt
- Freeze dried meals – 2-3 pouches as a backup, so we’re never stuck without food; they’re really easy to make with just the JetBoil. We really like Mountain House.
- Coghlan’s egg holder – do we need this? Probably not. But it’s good to know we can carry 6 eggs if we need to.
